The theme for March’s Reading Month was “You’re a Winner When You Read.”

Each grade level set a goal to read more than ever during the month.  Parents, teachers and students dropped everything to read and read a lot.  Prizes and books lined the office to be given away to the biggest readers.

Mrs. Reynolds kicked off the month with a game of Wheel of Fortune.  Three contestants were selected to play, Mr. Gowans, Mrs. Mellen, and Ms. Allred.  Each of the teachers had a chance to spin the wheel and pick a letter.  Mrs. Mellen guessed the puzzle - “READING MONTH AT PARKVIEW.”  Then Mrs. Reynolds explained that every week, the class with the most minutes in each grade would get a class prize.  The top reader in each grade would get a big prize.   Every Friday, the children who were reading would have their names put in a hat, names would be drawn, and the winners would get a prize. The prizes were toys, games, and of course, books!

Later in the month, Mrs. Reynolds surveyed the 5th and 6th graders to find the top answers to questions about their favorite books, authors, and series so we could play the game, “Classroom Feud.”  Teachers were divided into two teams, Mrs. Toelupe, Mrs. Groneman, Mrs. Smith, and Mr. .James on one team and Ms. Mcallister, Ms. Hutchson, Mrs. Busch, and Mrs.Toutai on the other.  During the game, the students found out that our favorite author is Rick Riordan, our favorite genres are fantasy and science fiction, our favorite classes are reading, math and writing, and some of our favorite book series are Shadow Children, Lightning Thief, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Dempsey Hardy said, “I’m getting to be a better reader.  I love to read.”  He summed up the thoughts of many students at Park View who dedicated themselves to reading.
