On Tuesday, December 4th, Chopper 5 from KSL News, visited Park View Elementary to kickoff the Read Today Program. The students at Park View lined up in formation to spell “Read Today” for Chopper 5 to see from the sky. Mayor Rick Moore, David Tuckett, Payson’s City Manager, Lieutenant Wright, and Miss Payson were there to encourage students to read.  Rick Moore attended Park View Elementary, as did his children, and now his grandchildren - which helps explain why he and the city manager have gone door to door through town, recruiting business support for reading.  "With everyone working together, that will help everybody read more," said Moore.  Local owners of McDonald’s, Poor Boys, Robbins Copy Center, Walmart, Southgate Hardware, Mountain Air Assisted Living, Calvin Blohm with State Farm, Crouch’s, Canyon Electric, DGS Store Fixture, Zions Bank, Café Rio, Brick Oven, Burger King, Stadium Cinemas, Daltons, Subway, and Little Caesars  are sponsoring the Read Today Program with funds, incentives, volunteered time or gift certificates to boost literacy.  "Having a school right here next to all our businesses and being part of it is awesome," said Zach Voorhees of Poor Boys BBQ and Dawgs.  Rhett Huff with Mountain Air Assisted Living is personally invested in the program -- his son will directly benefit.  "I have a second grader here and he was so excited about all this," said Huff.  Students are encouraged to set goals for reading.  When they achieve their goal, they will receive a coupon for goods or services from these local businesses.  Kenzingtin Baxter said, “It was so amazing! We got to be on the news! The sponsors were so generous with their amazing donations! It was a life changing experience!” All students were given heat changing pencils and a coupon for parachute bracelets.  Lindsey Welton added, “It was super, awesome; totally EPIC!!!!”  Many say it was the highlight of their year.
