E.J.Timms, author of The Big Red Bike, visits with Mr. Gowans' 4th Grade class after they had finished reading his book. Timms even brought the actual Schwinn Mark II Phantom bicycle from his award winning book. The book, The Big Red Bike, is a warm recollection of being nine years old in a time when bike-riding, bottle-collecting, and jumping into ponds were enjoyed all summer with one’s best friends. Timms book has won the IPPY Book of the Year Award as well as the Moonbeem Childrens Award.

Students at Park View Elementary participated in the annual reading contest. This year the contest was all about Reading Around the World. Students were each given a passport to fill with facts about different continents as well as to keep track of books read about or from different continents. Each week students reported on their reading goal which was then converted to miles and used to move them around the world. During the month, students who met the weekly reading goal were eligible to win prizes.

Pi Day Celebrations

Submitted by carrie.vannosdol on

Sixth grade students celebrated Pi Day (March 14 = 3.14) by learning about pi and circumference, reading books about pi, making pi jewelry, and having a pi memeorization contest. Afterwards, students used their knowledge to measure pies, split them evenly, and then eat them. Who knew math could be so yummy?
