N.O.V.A. Graduation Highlights

If you were asked, “Which wolf are you feeding?” what would you say?  The sixth grade students at Park View would answer, “There is a good wolf and a bad wolf in each and every one of us, but we choose which one we feed, or which one we fuel. If we are feeding the good wolf, by doing good and making wise choices, then we will be good people, but the opposite is true if we are feeding the bad wolf.”

N.O.V.A graduation was held on February 22, 2012 to honor the students who participated in the training taught by Officer Bill Wright.  To receive a Certification of Achievement Award from the N.O.V.A. program, participants were required to write a Constitution, with the theme, “My Roadmap to the Path of Excellence."  The expectation is that this constitution will guide and direct their lives in good, positive ways.  They were asked to list the things they value, recognize the many opportunities to help them be successful, and identify harmful substances that would keep them from reaching their dreams.  Kristie Reynolds, the principal at Park View, Mrs. Lundgren, Mrs. Doxey, Ms. Van Nosdol, Mayor Moore and Officer Wright were in attendance to congratulate those who completed their personal constitution.

Many of the students were seen at the graduation in their Grey N.O.V.A. t-shirts, which they had the opportunity to earn by doing three acts of service for others. Anyone who took on this challenge was given a T-shirt of recognitions for their kind acts.

Students were also challenged to view no media for a week; this meant no movies, TV or videos.  Students who took on the challenge and received the N.O.V.A Pack Award were:  Rylie Cunningham, Kobey Evans, Kaden Flippen, Faith Johnson, Hunter Johnson, Sabryne Kelly, Garrison Serynek, Abby Tervort, Caeden Ward, Megan Dixon, Brock Bulkley, Abbie Jensen, Dagen Bullock, Robbie Ewell, Myranda Goodworth, Kenji Heimuli, Carlie Jaussi, and Kaycee Lemperle.

Finally, the students were asked to make a plan and then build a rocket.  This plan was to represent plans that we can make in our own lives to reach success and new heights. The following students completed the task and received a N.O.V.A Rocket Award:   Rylie Cunningham, Paisley Finch, Daden Flippen, Dalob Jackson, Hunter Johnson, Abby Tervort, Kaisley Theobald, Beau Peterson, Evan Brandley, Hailey Ferreira, Maylee Lake, Manuel Escobar, Mollie Brown, Robbie Ewell, Haven Johanson, and Josh Walton.

To conclude the graduation event, students and guests were privileged to have the Utah County Sherriff‘s Canine Unit come to perform a demonstration showing just exactly what the dogs do and how they assist in police work. The demonstration included the dogs capturing the “bad guy” and using their keen senses to find drugs that had been strategically hidden. After the demonstration, students enjoyed asking many questions about he dogs. It was definitely a wonderful grand finale!

Congratulations to all the 6th graders who participated in this worthwhile program.
